I've seen these a few times before, but never caught one on camera until a few days ago. It looks just like a regular yellow cab, right up until the officers within set the strobes ablaze and are WHOOP-WHOOP-ing the sirens.
I've heard that you can pick them out from the rest because the number on the roof light doesn't match the license plate, but I've not been able to verify this.
How many of these roam the streets? What's their mission? My best guess is to catch other cabs in cab-like offenses; Taxi crime division(?).

Are there no entrapment laws in NYC? This seems like it would qualify.

I believe there are around 10 of them, split up among precincts. They use them for undercover stakeouts, surprise traffic tickets, and yeah, probably some hardcore taxi crime.
Also, there a few more ways to tell them apart from regular cabs. Stay tuned for a big post about all things yellow taxi!

So that's the matching plate/taxi number you have seen? You think it's the same one or they all share the same number?

Not sure. If its not the same number, its definitely very close. The Altima I see all the time, I think its what the precinct(19th) up by me has. I see them usually late at night driving slow down the avenues.
Once I was with two friends on 14th street crossing the street and I see one. I turn to one of my friends and tells him what it is, and he literately stares it down while the DT or whatever stares back. Kinda awkward but he knew we knew.

I always tell my friends when I see a unmarked Impaler, Vic, Fusion, Altima, Escape, or whatever, that I will give them $10 if they go up to the car, knock on the window, and say "Excuse me officers, but do you know where..."
